Are you thinking of investing in your own home gym so you don't have to deal with people while you are doing your workout?

You are not alone!

This is an ever-growing trend for people who can afford it. But are you ready to make such a big investment?

Well, if you are not decided yet, we will help you with a comparison between the two at different categories and scoring points from 0 - 5 for every topic:

1. Budget

2. Convenience

3. Maintenance

4. Time and Accessibility

5. Variety

And if you decide to go with the Home Gym, we prepared another blog post for you which will help you decide what you want to buy and every items importance. Here is the blog

Let's get into the ranking!

1.

This is a very tricky subject when thinking about starting you own home gym. How cost-effective it is compared to a regular gym membership and in how much time does the investment pay off?

A regular gym membership averages around £60 a month. That means around £720 a year. That is way cheaper then buying your own equipment and paying for the shipping, the total cost of that for a basic home gym with dumbbells, racks, power-tower, bench, bar + weights and a yoga mat is estimated at around £3000-£4000.

That means that in 5-7 years the investment pays for itself.

That means that, when thinking about your budget, both options are viable, but the Gym has the edge because of it's cheaper initial cost.

2.

This is another hard topic to evaluate even though at a first glance the winner is obvious.

But to correctly evaluate this topic, we need to go more in-depth with this analysis. Being able to work out at home is a dream a lot of people have, including me. It is way easier then going to the gym just because you don't need to spend time on the road and you can split up your workout throughout the day so you are less tired at the start of every exercise.

But, when you are just starting out, there is way more work you need to do at your home gym like providing the space and having to do all the research to find the best prices for each equipment you want.

Adding it all up, the Home Gym takes this topic with a 2 point difference.

Home Gym: 4 Points

Gym: 2 Points

3.

When talking about maintenance, we are really talking only about the Home Gym because if you get a Gym Membership there is no maintenance you need to do as the Gym has its own people to do it so from the start the Gym gets 5 Points.

Maintaining your Home Gym in good shape is not that hard really, there are few things you need to do weekly or monthly, but they can be done in a few minutes without any expertise or skill required. If you have one or plan on getting one and want to know the things you need to do, click here!

Overall, even though maintenance is not that hard to do, it is a thing to keep in mind when thinking about getting your own Gym

Home Gym: 3 Points

4.

This is the main reason people choose to switch between a gym membership and a home gym. Just the thought of having a gym 2 feet away from you and knowing it is always empty makes me excited.

To be fair, being able to have a gym near were you live is awesome and few people really realize how lucky we are to live in this times.

But for the sake of the comparison, a normal gym is way less accessible then a home gym, because you have to respect a schedule and I found myself struggling sometimes to finish my workout before the gym closed, even tho my gym closes at 23:00. It's a matter of how well you can manage your time, so if you are good at doing this, it shouldn't be a problem.

There are also times when the gym is repairing something and that thing can't be used, which rarely happens at your own gym, because, let's be honest, no one does that.

Home Gym: 5 Points

Gym: 3 Points

While the previous topic was the main reason people choose to switch and start their own home gym, this is the contrary. This is the topic that discourages people who try to have their own little "exercise den" just because you won't have all the machines you will find in a gym no matter how much money you spend.

The variety of every specific gym is different depending on the price of the membership and many other variables, but in the end, a gym gives you way more variability in your workout and that is very vital for training every part of the body correctly.

Having a big variety of exercise you can do gives you a sense of fun and excitement, being able to choose which cardio machine you want, how to train your shoulders and which weight to use when training your biceps. It is very important to diversify your workouts so you won't plateau.

But the best part are the classes you can choose and the swimming pool. That is something that you just can not buy.

Home Gym: 2 Points

Gym: 5 Points

So, what's the result?

As probably many of you have predicted, the Gym gets the edge in the top winning 3 out of 5 topics because of the cheaper price, no maintenance needed and a better variety while the home gym wins the time and accessibility.

Home Gym Gym

17 Points 19 Points
